Ruskin's THE SEVEN LAMPS OF ARCHITECTURE
Ruskin, John. THE SEVEN LAMPS OF ARCHITECTURE... With Illustrations Drawn by the Author. London: Smith, Elder, and Co., 1855. Large 8vo. xv, , 205 pages, plus 14 plates (including frontispiece). Contemporary or slightly later half morocco over marbled paper covered boards with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine; marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. Bound without the ads. Good plus. Wear to extremities with tips of boards showing on corners; surface of leather peeled in a few small places; green leather faded to tan on spine and portion of covers. Hinges are sound. Neat, early gift inscription at head of title page (above printed border). Some light to moderate foxing on plates and facing pages (heaviest instances depicted in the last two photos associated with this listing).
SECOND EDITION, so stated, and with a significant new preface (pp. [vii]-xv) outlining the author's principles, being a discussion of his four types of the admiration of architecture. This edition also bears new plates. For the first edition, Ruskin etched the plates himself but regarded his efforts as "careless" (p. xv). Nine of the drawings are here "re-etched" by R.P. Cuff. Plate IX, here bound as a frontispiece, is based on a new drawing by Ruskin and engraved by James Charles Armytage. While there is obvious interest in Ruskin's own efforts at etching, the plates in the second edition offer far greater detail and clarity as compared with those in the first. "The Seven Lamps of Architecture" was the first book Ruskin issued under his own name and the first book he illustrated. It is an important exposition of his aesthetic and moral principles applied to architecture and was influential in reshaping the Gothic revival.
