FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY NOTED AMERICAN PHYSICIAN, RICHARD DENNIS ARNOLD, at the head of the title page. Arnold (1808-1876), a native of Savannah, was one of the leading medical men from Georgia. A charter member of the American Medical Association (1846), he served as its vice-president and secretary. He was a founder of the Medical Society of the State of Georgia (1849) and its president in 1851. He helped establish the Savannah Medical College and was a longtime member of the faculty. Arnold was also a politician, who served as the mayor of Savannah for several terms and as a member of both houses of the state legislature. As mayor, he surrendered Savannah to Sherman in December, 1864. In addition, he was one of the three founders of the Georgia Historical Society (1839). An interesting provenance for one of the landmark books in the history of modern medicine.
"This American volume marks the first book-form publication of Simpson's essays and speeches, and thus represents his first full-dress exposition of the use of anaesthesia in childbirth and major surgery. The collection was never published in book form in England. . . " --Norman 1946.
