First Edition of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, 1962
Burgess, Anthony. A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. London: Heinemann, (1962). viii, 196 pages. Original publisher's purple cloth with gilt spine lettering. 20 x 13.5 cm. A fine copy in very good dust jacket. The leaves of the book are just a trifle toned, as expected. The front panel of the jacket has a small tear, which is repaired on the verso with no loss, and the affected area shows slight fading on the recto. The jacket is else near fine with a minuscule tear to the head of the spine panel, minor rubbing to the extremities, and a few faint scratches to the rear panel.
FIRST EDITION, second issue in purple cloth (previously issued in black cloth) and the second state of the dust jacket with the price of 18s on the front flap (the book was originally offered at 16s and later copies had a 21s price sticker). The author's most famous and controversial novel, and the inspiration for the 1971 Stanley Kubrick film of the same name. This first edition includes a final chapter discussing the reform of the protagonist, which was omitted from the American edition of the following year and subsequently from the screenplay for the movie.
